Data Integrity in DBMS

Hi everyone, inside this article we will see the concept of Data Integrity in DBMS.

In a DBMS (Database Management System), data integrity refers to the accuracy and consistency of the data stored in the database. The DBMS ensures data integrity by enforcing constraints and rules defined in the database schema, which prevent the entry of invalid data into the database.

The following are some of the ways that DBMS maintains data integrity:

Data Type Constraints: DBMS enforces data type constraints, which specify the type of data that can be stored in a particular field. For example, a field defined as an integer data type cannot store text or decimal values.

Range Constraints: DBMS also enforces range constraints, which specify the range of values that can be stored in a particular field. For example, a field that represents age cannot have a value less than 0 or greater than 120.

Key Constraints: DBMS enforces key constraints, which ensure that each record in a table is unique and identifiable. Primary keys and foreign keys are examples of key constraints.

Domain Constraints: DBMS enforces domain constraints, which ensure that the data entered into the database meets the specified criteria. For example, a domain constraint can be defined to ensure that a field only accepts a specific set of values.

Referential Integrity: DBMS enforces referential integrity, which ensures that the relationships between tables are maintained. Referential integrity ensures that a record in one table cannot reference a record in another table that does not exist.

Check Constraints: DBMS enforces check constraints, which ensure that the data entered into the database meets specific criteria. For example, a check constraint can be defined to ensure that a field only accepts values within a specified range.

We hope this article helped you to understand Data Integrity in DBMS in a very detailed way.
